Birnbeck Pier in Weston-super-Mare is a unique structure, being the only British pier that connects to an island, Birnbeck Island. Opened in 1867, it was designed by renowned engineer Eugenius Birch. However, it closed to the public in 1994 and has since fallen into disrepair, making it a sad sight at the seaside resort. Due to its historical significance, the pier has been listed as Grade II* and is on the "At Risk" Register of Historic England.
